Volcano Surfing is a popular, yet controversial stunt performed by casual and expert Super Mario 64 players alike. It is performed along the perimeter of the Lethal Lava Land volcano's mouth, either on foot or on a Koopa shell. The stunt was popularized in 2014 by Rennenhoek1991, a former Twitch streamer who was banned a month after he started to perfect the stunt.

Volcano Surfing

To surf the edge of the volcano, Mario must walk or ride a shell around the top of the volcano. Players have formed a general consensus on the tolerance by which an attempt is considered to be successful. Mario should be within 10 units of the top of the volcano, and he must not fall into the volcano (obviously). Style points are generally awarded based on the following factors:

  • Whether Mario is walking, running, crawling or riding a shell
  • Whether the volcano is actively spewing fire
  • Whether Mario is currently on fire

Since February of 2015, a seasonal volcano surfing competition has been hosted on SM64flaps.org. The current all-time champion of Volcano Surfing is the user Yufasa, with a high score of 3,937 points.

Trivia

Volcano Surfing is known by other names such as "Volcano Straddling" and "Volcano Rimming" but not often referred too as such due to concerns about the names being inappropriate for younger audiences.
